Queen of Hearts & Caterpillar

Halloween is my favorite time of year. It's fall, it's fun, and you can use SPARKLES and GLITTER and you can sew things to wear without having to worry if they're perfect or finished. And of course you get to play pretend, which we don't do often enough as adults. I think the real reason I love costumes is summed up by this quote:
"Clothes make a statement. Costumes tell a story." ~Mason Cooley
I <3 stories!

Often times people who don't sew are in awe of homemade costumes. But really, it's not that hard. You just have to try. And plan beforehand so you have an idea of construction.

Here are my plans:

And the result:

For the queen costume, I bought the red velvet dress, used a summer linen skirt and my prom dress petticoat, and then used fabric I had on hand to do all of the modifications. For the caterpillar, I bought a few yards of fabric and then used leftover foam from the Taco costume.

Many photos of the two different Alice in Wonderland entourages can be found on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/smazzle/sets/72157625157169869/.

Love it! What did you do?

Hi Dr. Hinze,

You definitely have the wrong Casey Williams. I live in Boston, and I work in search engine marketing. I just happened to get the email address caseywilliams at gmail. You would not believe how many of us there are out there. It looks like yours was the third to get Gmail - congrats to him/her!

I wish I had something to contribute about your concrete stacks, but I really have got nothing to say. I guess I could read the 11 articles you sent me... but instead I'll just say that I studied biology in school - my undergraduate thesis was on a glycoprotein of the Ebola virus. But it was far from the physics of concrete stacks or other safety hazards in construction.

I do work in a 65 story building in Boston. When it was first built, the windows used to pop out because some architect or builder messed up. And at UMass-Amherst, the library spits bricks. Maybe your research could have prevented those things from happening!

Good luck investigating this. I really hope you guys do your job well so nothing comes crashing down.

Best,
Casey A Williams

Three Musketeers Hit a Milestone

I would like to take a moment to say:

I am so excited for my cousin Margot's wedding this weekend!

Margot is just 3 months younger than I am, and though we didn't grow up in the same city - or even the same state - whenever we got together we had a blast. Along with my cousin Liz, a year older than us, we were known as the Three Musketeers.

To say that our families were (slash are) frugal is an understatement. We were not allowed to use paper towels when I was a kid - not because of green concerns, but because they cost money and hand towels or rags are just as good! So: Why send a kid to camp when you have perfectly good relatives with kids the same age? The answer is that you wouldn't. You would get them a ride with your co-worker, drive them down and leave them there, or in extreme cases, put them on an airplane.

I got to fly to visit Liz (and my aunt and uncle and two other cousins) in Wisconsin one summer for 10 days. It was pretty much the best thing that ever happened to me, mostly because of the airplane. I remember picking out my blue and white swiss polka-dot Easter dress and matching hat to wear on the flight. No this was not last week, it was when I was 7. But do swiss polka dots ever go out of style...?

That summer visit was particularly memorable not only due to the plane ride, but because I fell of the back of the swingset horse thing and got the wind knocked out of me for the first time. I was holding a grape popsicle. I hate grape popsicles, probably due to that incident.

I digress.

It seems that every other summer or so we would spend two weeks with each others' families. This didn't end when I was older - in fact I lived with Margot's family for two summers in Arlington, VA when I interned at the NIH during college.  Entire summers. I began referring to my aunt and uncle as my "Summer Mom" and "Summer Dad," and Margot was my "Summer Sister." I re-named their dog - Cody - to Coco. I miss Coco.

I have ~30 cousins, and 7 second cousins, but only 2 musketeers. And now we're all growed up. Well we've been grown up with jobs, etc for a while.. but weddings are a milestone. One that I'm so happy to be present for.

Congrats, Margot & Nathan! You can be sure Liz and I won't be too far behind, as usual. Or so I hope. :-)

Hi James,

Let me tell you, whoever is getting these quotes for moving their vehicle is really doing their homework! I think this is the 6th one I've received. They are either REALLY excited about moving from Michigan to California (well, who wouldn't be?), or really watching their pennies and looking for the best deal.

Actually the most likely reason I've gotten so many of these quotes is that this person is wondering why the hell none of these sites are emailing him/her the quotes, so they keep trying different sites (and sometimes the same site over and over again) in an attempt to get the information. I can only hope that they soon realize that they are spelling their email address incorrectly otherwise their car will be staying in Michigan when they leave.

Either way, I wanted to make sure to tell you that I myself am not moving. Nor is my car. We will be staying here in Boston.  I hope my doppelganger makes it to California safely - and with an intact car.

Best,

Casey A Williams

That may be the longest and nicest way anyone has told me to “take me off your list”.  LOL

I can’t speak for the other guys, but I will make a note that this email is not valid.

Thank you and have a great day!

Hi Jim,

It happens a lot... by a lot, I mean daily. I sometimes write about them on my blog.
The name Casey Williams is just uncommon enough that people assume they have THE gmail address! But they don't, I do.

Good luck!
Casey

PS. I can't believe there was a human on the other side of this quote! Kudos to you and the company. :-)
