Queen of Hearts & Caterpillar

Halloween is my favorite time of year. It's fall, it's fun, and you can use SPARKLES and GLITTER and you can sew things to wear without having to worry if they're perfect or finished. And of course you get to play pretend, which we don't do often enough as adults. I think the real reason I love costumes is summed up by this quote:
"Clothes make a statement. Costumes tell a story." ~Mason Cooley
I <3 stories!

Often times people who don't sew are in awe of homemade costumes. But really, it's not that hard. You just have to try. And plan beforehand so you have an idea of construction.

Here are my plans:

And the result:

For the queen costume, I bought the red velvet dress, used a summer linen skirt and my prom dress petticoat, and then used fabric I had on hand to do all of the modifications. For the caterpillar, I bought a few yards of fabric and then used leftover foam from the Taco costume.

Many photos of the two different Alice in Wonderland entourages can be found on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/smazzle/sets/72157625157169869/.

Love it! What did you do?

  1. Very clever to not to sew the whole thing from scratch. Did you go to a thrift store or buy new?
    You're both very cute!
I still hate glitter and only bought it for you!
